Icon Fresco of St. Afra, the
Once-Harlot and Martyr of Augsburg
Feast Day:
August 5
St. Afra
was a repentant harlot of Augsburg who was burned to death at Köln
(Cologne) in the persecution of emperor Diocletian. Her family having
shown great daring in giving her body honourable burial, were
apprehended and burned to death. She features prominently in the
Litany of Saints which is part of the observances of the old rite in
England called the Sarum rite.
