Icons of St. Alexis of Rome,
the "Man of God"
Feast Day:
July 17
Son of the
Roman senator Euphemian, Alexis had a good Christian upbringing.
Betrothed to a girl by his parents, he broke off the marriage ceremony
and fled to Syria. After 17 years there, he returned to Rome and to his
parents' house, but as a stranger. They permitted this unknown vagrant
to live under a staircase, where the servants of his parents maltreated
him, all unknowingly. One day when St. Innocent I, Pope of Rome, was
celebrating the Mass, a voice was heard from heaven, "Seek the man of
God..." As indicated, St. Alexis was sought out, and his lifeless
body was found under the staircase, a parchment in his hand explaining
his whole life and his rare podvig.
