Icons of St. Augustine of Hippo, Bishop in Africa, named a Church Teacher by the Sixth Oecumenical Council of the Orthodox Church.

Feast: Aug. 15

Top Icon: from the Atelier of St. Andrew in France. St. Augustine is here shown in Western-rite bishop's vestments of the 13th century. The diamond-shaped subcingulum is a standard vestment for the Roman rite as it was preserved in mediaeval Italy.

Next Icon: of unknown provenance, but appears to be of Greek origin and is featured on the cover of the latest edition of Fr. Seraphim (Rose)'s magnificent work, "The Place of Blessed Augustine in the Orthodox Church."

Next Icon: from an old manuscript in the British Library. A priest presents a book to St. Augustine.

Next Icon: by the hand of Mary Sullivan Coit

Next Icon: by the hand of Maria Ciucur of Romania.

Next Icon: the oldest known icon of St. Augustine of Africa, a 6th-century fresco in the Church of St. John Lateran in Rome.

Next Icon: by the hand of iconographers Klaus and Barbara Kegelmann

Next Icon: drawing of icon by Ralles Kopsidis, student of Photios Kontoglou.

Beneath the last icon is shown the reliquary of St. Augustine with the elbow of the Saint, at a church in Algiers, Algeria, near ancient Hippo.
