Icon of St. Bavo, Bishop of
Maastricht (the younger Saint at rt., in the icon)
Feast: October 1
Bavo
(Bavon, Baudemund, Allowin) was a selfish youth who was, however,
converted by the preaching of St. Amandus of Maastricht. A widower, he
built an abbey on his land, wherein later he was tonsured to the
angelic life. Having given away all earthly possessions, he lived for a
time in the hollow of a tree on the abbey estates, and later in a small
cell in the woods, adopting the life of a recluse. In the Sarum use
there is a solemn feast of St. Bavo, with other Saints, on Oct.
1. Holy Father Bavo, pray to God for us!
