Iconic drawing of Our Holy
Mother
Marcellina (+398), virgin, sister of St. Ambrose
Feast: June 17
Our holy monastic mother
Marcellina (c. 330 – 398) was the only sister of Saint Ambrose,
Bishop of Milan. Born about the year 330, probably in Trier, where her
father resided as praefectus praetorio Galliarum, she chose to live a
life of virginity with none but Our Lord, God, and Saviour Jesus Christ
as her Bridegroom. She gave herself entirely to deeds of piety and
podvig (ascetic struggles). On the feast of Our Lord's Nativity, in the
year 253 or so, she took the veil at the hands of the patriarch of Old
Rome, Pope Liberius. This wonderful woman of God reposed in 398 or
shortly afterwards, and was buried in the crypt under the altar of the
Ambrosian Basilica, receiving honour as a Saint of God. Holy Venerable
Mother Marcellina, pray to God for us!
Icon: of unknown
provenance.
